The Spiritual Journey can often feel like a series of struggles, frustrations and set backs. Guess what, this is not unusual and you aren't alone in this, however, it definately can be lonely and confusing. If you are a Christian you may know you aren't alone, you are on journey with Jesus, equipped with the Holy Spirit, and may even be attending church, but you are experiencing some form of disconnect with God and your Soul's Purpose.
Did you know there are stages on the faith journey? If you are stuck or stagnant on your path there could be a variety of reasons. One reason could be that you are being invited into a new phase of your journey. Janet O. Hagberg and Robert A. Guelich in their book Critical Journey,Stages in the Life of Faith speak of 6 stages. The first 3 stages consist much of what the church would call discipleship, and these are definately important seasons of growth and many are content to remain within these stages.
As a spiritual director and coach who has walked with a variety of clients for over ten years I notice that those who reach out to me are needing guidance and accompaniment through the ongoing stages of their journey which could happen at varying times of life. They may be struggling with their identity and purpose, feeling stuck spiritually, having a faith crisis, or noticing this nagging longing within for a deeper experience and connection to God. They may not realize it, but what they are experiencing could actually be God's invitation to move forward.
Stage 4 moves into more of the inner journey which can be confusing and lonely. This stage and onward is when it is important to have a trained and experienced guide to walk with you. You could go it alone or with a friend but you might find yourself wandering rather than experiencing peace, connection, purpose, freedom and growth. It is especially helpful to have a spiritual director walk with you when you come to the stage called The Wall. You may actually experience this more than once on your journey. Hagberg and Guelich say; "The process of meeting the Wall requires going through the Wall, not underneath it, over it, around it, or blasting it...Frequently, we also need a human guide to instruct, support, keep us on track, or just experience the Wall with us." p.119
Each soul's journey is unique, even what the Wall looks like is unique. If you find yourself in a season of spiritual mystery perhaps the Holy Spirit is drawing you forward. I would be honored to walk with you through your Wall and beyond.
